The City of Langley is a 10 square kilometer urban area in the Lower Mainland and offers its residents all the amenities of a major urban centre. The City of Langley is well known for its distinctive retail offerings and eateries, while the surrounding area has become a magnet for high-end luxury brands and big box retail. Offering a pedestrian-oriented downtown core and a Kwantlen Polytechnic University campus located right in town, the City boasts a high-end shopping centre, independent stores, farmers' markets, antique retailers, community arts and over 346 acres of parkland to explore.

The original settlement of Langley City was called Innes Corners and later was call Langley Prairie and in 1955 the city of Langley was incorporated as it own separate municipality. The area has an active industrial and service commercial land bases for the Lower Mainland.

The Township of Langley is located in the southwest corner of BC, it is 45 kilometers east of Vancouver and the Trans Canada Hwy runs through it dissecting the northern part of the municipality from the south. The northern boundary is the Fraser River and the southern boundary goes right to the US border, Surrey and the City of Langley is to the west and Abbotsford is to the east. There is something for everyone in the Township of Langley. Movie theatres, restaurants, playhouses and pubs; children and families can enjoy one of the recreation and community centres or visit the museum or library.

The municipality was incorporated in Fort Langley in 1873 and was known as the Birthplace of BC. The first European settlers to stay in the area were traders from the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1827 Fort Langley was built on the backs of the Fraser River, in the area now known as Derby Reach. It was one of the string of trading posts that were built up and down the river to the Pacific Ocean to compete with the American fur traders. Farming, cranberry and salmon exports soon replaced the fur trading as the Fort's primary source of income. In 1858 gold was discovered up the Fraser River, in the interior of BC and the Fort became an important supply station for miners heading up the river to the mine fields. The British government created British Columbia as a colony and named New Westminster the capital as it was more defensible from a United States invasion than Fort Langley was.
